History of Varahi Amman:

According to puranas and Hindu mythology, Varahi Amman is considered to be an incarnation of Goddess Durga. In one hand, it is mentioned that when Goddess Durga tried to kill, the demon Ratta Bhijan, she divided her great power into seven parts and sent them to fight him, and on the other hand it is mentioned that, Lord Vishnu when he took the form of Varaha (wild boar), he took the form of Goddess Lakshmi as his companion and became Goddess Varahi. Varahi Amman is the family deity for those who practice witchcraft and tantric worship. History mentions that the worship of Goddess Varahi existed in the country since the Sangathamil period. History also says that it was Varahi Amman who was responsible for the construction of Tanjore Peruvudayar Temple by Rajarajan Cholan. When Rajaraja Cholan was looking for a place to build the Peruvudayar temple, Varahi Amman took the form of a wild boar and guided him and that is why he built a shrine for Varahi Amman at Peruvudayar temple in Thanjavur.

Form of Goddess Varahi:

Goddess Varahi has the head of a wild boar and the form of a female body. She always prefers to wear black clothes and appears to be seated on a lion vehicle. Varahi Amman's eight thirukaras are her specialty. In each of her hands she has: Aerkalappa, Choolam, Srichakaram, Kathayutham, Sangu, Ankusam, Abhaya and Varada mudras.
