Primary use — Japa (mantra chanting) Hold the mala in your right hand, draped over the middle finger. Use your thumb to pull each bead towards you, chanting one mantra per bead. Do not use the index finger. When you reach the Meru (Guru) bead after 108 counts, do not cross it — turn the mala around and continue in the reverse direction for the next round.

3. Sit facing east or north, spine upright, in a clean and quiet space.
4. Set an intention in one sentence before you start counting.
5. Chant one mantra per bead, moving with the thumb, keeping the mala above waist level and not touching the ground.
6. Stop at the Meru bead. Reverse direction for each additional round.
7. Close the session by touching the mala to your forehead and heart, then store it respectfully.
8. Keep it personal. A japa mala is traditionally not shared or handled by others.
